Mephedrone / Meow Meow Ban
Monday, 19 April 2010

On the 16th April 2010 Mephedrone (also known as Meow Meow, MCAT or Bubble) became a Class B drug, controlled under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. This means it is against the law to possess, give away or sell Mephedrone or any other related cathinone derivatives. Anyone caught with it could face up to five years in prison, or fourteen years if they are trying to sell it.

The Facts

Mephedrone, previously sold as plant food or bath salts and labelled “not for human consumption” is a highly addictive drug which is part of the cathinone family.

It normally comes as a white/yellowish powder and can be snorted, swallowed or smoked.

It has been reported that the drug gives the user a sense of euphoria, alertness and talkativeness. It can also cause panic attacks, fits, anxiety, and paranoia and can cause serious heart or lung problems.

Mephedrone is a relatively new drug and we do not know much about the long-term side effects using it may cause, although we know it is dangerous and has been linked with a number of deaths in the UK.

Visit Talk to Frank for more information about mephedrone, other drugs and alcohol.

Or read the latest from the Home Office about the Home Secretary’s ban on mephedrone.

“Reducing Drug and Alcohol Harms to Communities and Families”

The Communities Against Drugs team have worked with the Home Office to produce updated national guidance on working with families and communities to address drug and alcohol misuse.

The first part of the guidance draws on the experience of CAD and provides a practical, tested and structured approach to support anyone working in the field.

The second part explores the impact of drugs on families and ways to respond, using models of effective family intervention, and providing examples of good practice.

The guidance has now been published and is available on the Home Office Website here: www.drugs.homeoffice.gov.uk/publication-search/drug-strategy/reducing-drug-and-alcoho-harmsD=700621
